console my soul (pt. i): Memory + Offering for the Black Environmentalist
Join us to celebrate Black August and the summer slowdown with Black Girl Environmentalist NYC Hub's beach day series, Console My Soul. Console My Soul is a two-part beach day.
console my soul (part i) AUGUST 23RD, 11a-4p, is as unique, spiritually empowering, and creative a beach day can possibly get!
We will start the day by reflecting and offering exercise from Environmentalist and African Spiritualist, Zainab Henrietta, a multi-generational Black Atlantic spiritualist of Maguzawa, Hausa, and Fulani descent of Northern Nigeria.
To follow, we will have a donation-based cyanotype workshop on memory (otherwise use the sun as your camera--sun-based photography) provided by SOLA Market and BGE Hub Lead, Oluwakemi Oritsejafor, and Nic Villarosa of Anotherworld Crown Height. We ask participants who are joining to share TWO images max that are representative of their reflections on 'memory' whether it is photos of loved ones, ancestors, yourself, or what you hope to not forget in this life time. We will share a dropbox folder for you to submit TWO images upon registration for the event.
We will close out the day with a hike through the Fort Tilden National Parkway dunes. Fort Tilden is a retired army base now one of NYC's jewels, and one of Oluwakemi's favorite places on earth! Oluwakemi will guide us through the old hiking paths of NYC's most famous protected wild dunes and natural beaches that also was home to bunkers, barracks, and housed nuclear missiles, we will end at the top of the missile bunker which you will find remnants of the past across it's grounds.
Folks can feel free to stay after for some beach hangs and a refreshing dip after our hike at Fort Tilden.
