Dragons & Dragons (D&D) with Dietrich
This is an RPGFest event; we'll be playing an in-person tabletop roleplaying game with a small group. The game will be hosted in Western Queens. Come prepared to roleplay!
Contains 100% more dragons than other brands!
Years ago, I joined a tabletop campaign as a temporary player. The DM said, “You can make your character anything. Even something custom, like, pick a monster out of the monster manual. I’ll allow it.” As is the custom of my people, I said that I want to be a dragon. The DM looked at me, thought about my proposal, and flipped through the books. He said, “No. Pick something else.”
That episode is behind us; now is the time to be a dragon. Each of you, each player, will play a character that is a dragon. What are dragons like? For this inquiry, we must consult the great American novelist Ursula Le Guin.
In The Farthest Shore (1972):
“We men dream dreams, we work magic, we do good, we do evil. The dragons do not dream. They are dreams. They do not work magic: it is their substance, their being. They do not do; they are.”
In Why are Americans Afraid of Dragons? (1974):
“So: Why are Americans afraid of dragons?”
[…]
“They know that its truth challenges, even threatens, all that is false, all that is phony, unnecessary, and trivial in the life they have let themselves be forced into living. They are afraid of dragons, because they are afraid of freedom.”
As for the game—we will be playing Dungeons & Dragons, except without the dungeons. Each player will play a powerful dragon in a short, one-shot campaign.
