DeSciNYC: The Billion Oyster Project
Billion Oyster Project is a New York City-based nonprofit organization on a mission to restore 1 billion oysters to NYC's Harbor by 2035 through restoration and education initiatives. Oysters provide a number of beneficial effects for the ecosystem including filtering water via filter feeding, increasing habitat for other animals, and protecting shorelines from storm surges. Learn about the health of the harbor from Billion Oyster Project staff, and how you can get involved with oyster monitoring and water quality testing.

Zeke King Phillips is the Senior Community Stewardship Coordinator for the Billion Oyster Project, managing their Community Science ecological monitoring program. He is also a PhD candidate at the University of Cincinnati, focusing on the relationship between dietary ecology and climate in land snails.
Cody Herrmann is the Senior Community Science Coordinator at Billion Oyster Project. Inspired by lack of waterfront access and disproportionately high levels of sewage pollution in her neighborhood, Cody began combining socially engaged art, and community science to create participatory art works and public programs focused on NYC's harbor in 2014.
