Estartit & the Medes Islands: A Journey Through History and Nature
Estartit, a coastal town with maritime roots dating back to the 17th century, once served as a key port for exporting local goods like rice and wine to cities such as Barcelona. Just one kilometer offshore lies the Medes Islands, a protected marine reserve renowned for its rich seabed, home to seagrass meadows, corals, and vibrant marine life—making it a favorite spot for divers.
Historically, the islands were a pirate hideout in the 16th and 17th centuries, later hosting a prison and military garrison until they were abandoned in 1934. Since 1983, they've been under environmental protection.
Visitors can explore this natural paradise aboard the Corsario Negro, a replica pirate ship, on a scenic 3-hour tour around the islands and cliffs, with swimming stops included in this stunning setting.
