About Event

Comedy enriches our lives with creativity, human connection, and confidence. Yet many consider being funny an innate talent instead of a learnable skill. They are all going to laugh at us in the end!

Let’s demystify the mechanics of comedy, and learn to infuse humor on stage and in everyday life. We will dive into the basics of joke creation, the nuances of comedic storytelling, and the practice of delivery.

Each of the 4 sessions will start with 10-15 minutes of foundational theory followed by a hands-on workshop and a short performance practice.

  • Feb 6th: Craft your first joke! Learn how to craft punchlines by subverting the setup’s expectations.

  • Feb 20th: Understand laughter! Explore laughter triggers such as surprise, recognition, and incongruity and understand why some jokes work better than others.

  • March 5th: Command the stage! Face the challenge of being in the spotlight and practice your stage presence. Learn how to deliver jokes that hit, or at least how to make an awkward save. ;)

  • March 19th: Dive deeper! Delve into advanced techniques including character building, exaggeration, and the rule of three to expand your comedic vocabulary and refine your style.

The sessions are structured to prepare you for your first standup routine, but the skill can help you crack jokes with friends, coworkers, or on your blog. To take full advantage, make sure to attend all four sessions and carve out time for joke-writing in between. Feel free to drop in any of them if your time is limited. We'll wrap up with a separate open mic event to put our skills to the test!

550 Studio: We’ll be meeting in the way back of The Commons. Go through the co-working hall to the largest event space
