Should Class be Dismissed in Pursuit of Self-Directed Learning? With Jeremy Stuart
What does it mean to be educated?
In the context of the 21st century, the idea of being ‘educated’ is becoming less rigid and increasingly broad as more and more parents look beyond the walls of the classroom to find a meaningful education for their children.
This is a question that Jeremy Stuart has been asking himself for a number of years, which he decided to answer in an unexpected way: through film.
Jeremy Stuart is a film industry veteran who has worked with companies like Pixar, GoPro, Disney, National Geographic Channel, discovery Channel and more. After forming his own production company 3StoryFilms in 2015, Jeremy directed, co- produced and edited his first feature length documentary called Class Dismissed. Class Dismissed has gone to screen in more than 60 countries worldwide and has been translated into 5 languages.
Class Dismissed interrogates the issues that are rife in most conventional schooling systems and dives into alternative ways of learning outside of the traditional classroom. More specifically, the film aims to answer a number of poignant questions such as:
What does it mean to be educated in the 21st Century
Is it possible to get an education without attending school?
Can learning outside of the classroom really provide a nurturing and educationally rich experience in which children can grow and blossom?
We’re excited to have Jeremy join inspirEd by Galileo for a discussion around his experience as both a filmmaker and parent exploring the world of alternative, self-directed education and what it truly means to be educated. Jeremy will address some common questions that parents have around entering the world of alternative education such as:
Will my kids turn out alright?
Will my kids be prepared to function in society?
Will my kids still be able to get into college if they want to?
Is this approach recommended to everyone or just those with a special need or interest?
