About Event

Join us to celebrate and give thanks to one of the oldest Western Red Cedars in the Seattle area, before it is cut down by Bellevue developer Legacy Capital.

This healthy cedar is believed to be one of the oldest in the area, predating the homes around it. Its two trunks are each about four feet in diameter.

The lot where it grows was purchased by Bellevue developer Legacy Capital and divided into two smaller lots. Seattle's land use code SMC 23.24.040 requires that saving trees be considered when drawing new lot lines.

Instead, this lot was divided so that the cedar is now too big for its new, smaller lot.

This native tree grows near the property edge and could easily have provided shade to the same size and number of new homes. Instead, a simple stroke of a planner's pen turned this PNW icon into a development obstacle.

We hope that its loss will spur the community to advocate for all our trees, especially these majestic conifers which are Seattle's heritage. We can build new homes WITH our trees!

Please join us and if you can, bring roses and petals to create a mandala honoring this tree.
