About Event

What is cultural appropriation and how does it relate to the global history of fashion? Along with our monthly theme, “Understanding Cultural Appropriation,” FRD Senior Researcher and Managing Editor, Dr. Laura Beltrán-Rubio, will lead an open conversation that considers the close relationship between the history of fashion and power dynamics in shaping cultural appropriation.

Guided by three handpicked items for you to read and view, here’s what we’ll discuss:
- How can we define cultural appropriation?
- How is cultural appropriation embedded in design practice?
- What is the relationship between cultural appropriation, the history of colonialism, and the geopolitics of fashion?
- If a designer or brand steps into cultural appropriation, what can be done to repair the damages caused?
- What actions and strategies can be embraced to prevent cultural appropriation?

Your assignment!

Please view and read (or skim) the following items:
1. Short read: “Fashion and Cultural Appropriation: Legal and Ethical Considerations” by Anu Varshini
2. Video (24 minutes): “appreciator/protector” by Dr Jessica Metcalfe
