What is Tacit Knowledge?
Trying something new.
A lecture on tacit knowledge: the things we know beyond what we can say.
Tacit knowledge is any knowledge that is unarticulated.
You can ride a bike but can you describe how? Even if you were to describe in detail how riding a bike worked to someone who had never done it before it would never be enough for them to fully learn the activity.
The learner would need to watch carefully to pick up details left out by the description, try to ride and make mistakes to understand the full implications of what was said. Eventually though they too would know how to ride a bike. This gap between what can be described and what can be known is tacit knowledge - what we know but we don't know how.
Come learn why - shockingly - we still haven't fully digested the fact that tacit knowledge exists at all. Understand the kind of environments that allow for tacit knowledge pick up. Learn the art of uncovering what is hidden, and start to think about what tacit knowledge means for an era of AI.
Most of what we know is hidden. Until we properly appreciate this fact we risk not only hobbling our ability to learn but also undermining the very skills that hold up our society today.
This is Beta test for a new lecture series.
Toronto is blessed to have some of the most interesting builders, craftsman, academics, and storytellers in the world. We want to create a platform for them to share what they know, educate others in the city, and entertain.
The run of show for the test will be roughly:
20 minutes lecture
20 minutes Q&A
20 minutes discussion about the format.
The event is pay what you want with a recommended payment of $5.
Treat this as being part of a new experiment to expand the Toronto ecosystem. Please come with an open mind, expect some rough edges, and plan to share your thoughts.
