Olito Social Club: "Stress-Free Forever"
Think Olio is an ongoing experiment in lifelong learning. We are a community of open-minded people who gather to exchange ideas with new friends and connect over art, literature, and philosophy.
Olito is the Friday night social club born out of our community, giving us a place to gather each week. You're always welcome, whether you come solo or with friends - the vibes are communal and thoughtful.
For this Friday's Olito, we’ll explore what "self-help" means to us. Think: our favorite love/hate self-help books, podcasts, gurus and more.
The Birth of Self-Help
The earliest progenitor of what we might label "self-help books" was an Ancient Egyptian genre called “Sebayt,” an instructional literature on life (“Sebayt” means “teaching”). A letter of advice from father to son, The Maxims of Ptahotep, written circa 2800 B.C., which advocated moral behavior and self-control.
Self-help, self-optimization, wellness... how did we turn 'feeling good' into a whole industry?
From ancient Egypt to Benjamin Franklin and Deepak Chopra what is it about tidy step by step life advice that is so appealing? Has any of it really stuck with you and changed your perspective?
Let's talk about it!
We'll have conversation cards and prompts, great pizza, wine and N/A drinks all to the musical backdrop of Carter Zumtobel's ambient album inspired by some 90's self-help tapes he found on the street in Park Slope.
Ethos of the Olito wine bar <3
In a community effort against the loneliness epidemic and political nihilism, custom-made conversation cards on communal tables invite guests to explore culture, creativity, and connection with strangers at this social club / wine bar.
We dream of a phone-less bar. We won't tell you to put it away but our hope is that the vibe will be so good, you won't even remember you have an instagram.
Come support and bring that good energy so we can keep this thing going and grow roots for our Olio community <3
