Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Unsent Letter Mailbox? The Unsent Letter Mailbox is a temporary public installation and live storytelling project that has been collecting anonymous letters since February. It creates a safe space for people to express thoughts they've never been able to say out loud — to ex-lovers, estranged family members, future selves, or anyone else.

How many people have participated so far? Over 1,000 people have written letters to the Unsent Letter Mailbox since it began, creating a collection of shared human experiences and emotions.

What does "you must earn your write to read" mean? To participate, you write one anonymous letter, which earns you the right to read one letter written by someone else. It's an exchange — your vulnerability for someone else's.

What exactly will I be asked to do? You'll write one anonymous letter to anyone about anything that's been left unsaid, then read aloud one letter written by another participant. Both activities are completely anonymous.

Do I have to share personal details about myself? Not at all. Your letter is completely anonymous — no names, signatures, or identifying information. You control what you choose to write about.

What if I'm not a good writer or speaker? This isn't about perfect writing or performance. It's about authentic expression. People read in their own style and pace, and every voice adds to the experience.

Will people know which letter I wrote? No. All letters are anonymous and mixed together before reading. No one will know which letter you wrote unless you choose to share that afterward.

What if the letter I'm given to read is too personal or triggering? If you receive a letter you're uncomfortable reading, you can quietly exchange it for another. The hosts are there to support you.

Can I bring a friend? Absolutely. Many people find it easier to attend with someone they know, and you're welcome to bring a guest.

What if I get emotional while reading or listening? Emotions are welcome and expected. The space is designed to hold whatever feelings arise, and there's no pressure to "keep it together."

Is this actually safe and confidential? Yes. The project has hosted over 1,000 letters with complete anonymity maintained. What's shared in the room stays in the room.

What should I expect from the atmosphere? Think intimate coffee shop meets poetry reading — soft lighting, gentle music, and people genuinely present with each other.

As the hosts say, "We don't do small talk here. We write. We read. We feel."
