Socratica Film Fest
We wanted to showcase the incredible talent of Socratica’s filmmakers—so we rented a movie theatre.
Welcome to the inaugural Socratica Film Fest at the historic Original Princess Theater in Uptown Waterloo! Get ready for an electrifying afternoon packed with seven unforgettable short films and two captivating documentaries, all created by passionate creatives from our sessions. Stick around afterward for a live Q&A, where filmmakers pull back the curtain on their creative journeys. And the best part? Admission is free.
This isn’t just a screening; it’s a celebration of storytelling—a chance for the Waterloo community to come together, discover bold new voices, and enjoy fresh perspectives from emerging creators. Whether you’re a film buff, a curious local, or just looking for a good time, this festival is for everyone.
So, grab your crew—or fly solo—and join us for a festival where art meets community. Let’s amplify student-made films, elevate local talent, and make some movie magic together. The only thing missing is you.
Doors open at 12:45 pm.
So...what is Socratica?
⁂ Socratica is an open collective of makers, artists, founders, researchers, designers, and everything in-between. A safe space for our shared love of making things.
Great creative work is historically done together, across backgrounds and disciplines, in small, high trust groups. We’re at our best together, and you are invited. <3
Film Lineup (in their creator's words)
Everywhere – Julian Yam and Jun Chao Yang
Everywhere is a love letter to our campus here at UWaterloo. After staying here for a few years we thought we’d showcase it, in a fun and exciting way. Thank you to Socratica who inspired us to create - everything was shot and edited within two sessions :)
Letterboxing – Jaryd Diamond
An aspiring filmmaker suddenly finds herself trapped by a mysterious and all-powerful force - the camera itself.
A Series of Cinematics – Max Wentzlaff
A visual experience meant to showcase the beauty of cinematography and the various styles and genres held within. Not a short film, but rather A Series of Cinematics.
Alone – Emily Pierce
Going to a horror movie alone seemed like a good idea until it starts to feel like every dark corner is hiding something.
Autopilot – Nefise Akcakir
Autopilot explores the monotony of balancing two demanding jobs and the toll it takes on self-awareness and creativity. Trapped in a cycle of repetitive tasks, the protagonist slowly awakens to the world around them by trying new experiences —skateboarding, running, and learning to film.
Snowbirds – Stephen Cao
Across the plains of the American midwest, to the peaks of the Canadian Rockies, with all the friends made along the way. Snowbirds is a three-act story about the winter that only existed in my wildest dreams — until now.
Mint Tea – Donald Jewkes
How to get to the desert.
This is Socratica – Julia Fedorin
A documentary about Socratica (specifically) in summer 2024. We filmed various interviews of attendees, sessions, as well as all the fun we had as a maker community this past summer.
Unstuck – Anson Yu
A documentary on climate solutions, for people that don't like thinking about climate change.
