Hinga at Pahinga (A Filipino Restshop)
As Filipinx/a/os, our lineage and history are rich with resistance and struggle. But how can we continue to fight for a just world if we're constantly depleted?
Hinga at Pahinga is an intentional, guilt-free space to explore the power of rest as a revolutionary act for community. Through exploring Filipino childhood games and art that nurtured our innate sense of joy, ease and creation, we reset our breath together. Join us to rediscover the strength that comes from slowing down and returning to our essence.
This gathering is about:
Reconnecting with the essence of our breath and inner knowing, the source of our strength and resilience.
Creating a guilt-free, intentional space for slowness and recovery to sustain our fight for justice & dismantling oppressive systems and thinking
Nurturing our creative selves to help us imagine and build new ways of being
Strengthening our relationship with each other through joy, play, rest and creation
Restshop includes:
Exploring games and art from our Filipino childhood
Activities that unpack the different forms of rest (physical, social, emotional, spiritual)
Filipino snacks to enjoy with the community
New merch launch inspired by anting-anting (Filipino amulet), love, and embracing and returning to our wholeness (a collaboration line between Pinay Collections x Althea Balmes). Available for purchase
Facilitators:
Jovie Galit (she/her) is a hand lettering artist and racial justice organizer, currently living as a settler in Tkaronto. Originally from Nueva Ecija, Philippines, her immigration journey has deeply influenced her art and identity. Drawing from the wisdom of her community, she holds strong to abolitionist, anti-imperialist, and anti-colonial values. As an artist, she founded Pinay Collection, a social enterprise and feminist merchandise line that reclaims our Pina/xy identity.
Althea Balmes (she/they/siya) is a multidisciplinary visual storyteller & arts-educator. I carry the Ilocano and Ilonggo lineages and stories of my ancestors. My artistic work focuses on the multiplicity of our experience of migration and diasporic personhood. I tap into the ancestral, the sacred and the intangible cultures of my people. I approach this work like visual ethnographies to connect to past, present and future existence and the Unseen worlds. My work is about deepening our human experience and being a witness to alternative worldviews and realities. For my people, my hope is that the work is healing.
This event operates on a sliding scale between $5 to $25 as a form of energy exchange for the artists’ labour and resources; however, no one will be turned away for lack of funds. Please email us at hello@pinaycollection.com should you need to inquire about pricing.
Masking is encouraged, and masks will be available at the venue. For the venue's full accessibility information, please check out this link.
