Rare Effect 2024: Mapping Scene Sonics — A Squad Foraging Practice with Gingy, followed by Open Call Film Night
In an era where artificial intelligence increasingly mediates our cultural experiences, this workshop creates a collaborative cartography of sound and meaning. As we face unprecedented ecological collapse and fears of human obsolescence in an AI-driven world, this squad-based practice offers a counternarrative: one where technology becomes a tool for collective expression rather than algorithmic authority, and where community wisdom creates pathways through crisis.
The workshop unfolds through an iterative foraging process that begins with AI-generated audio clips, created using the stable-audio-open model through an initial seed prompt. Squad members (i.e. workshop participants) engage in collective listening sessions, gathering interpretations and responses like specimens from a shared sonic landscape. Their group dataset is fed into a collective sensemaking algorithm, then used to retrain the base generative model, giving them new “words” to search this retrained sonic space with - exclusively theirs to use.
The use of AI in this context serves not as a replacement for human creativity but as a surveying tool for mapping our collective consciousness and facilitating coordination.
This session will take place in English.
