This session delves into the learnings and benefits of developing an automated performance tracking system early in production for an unannounced title built in Unreal Engine 5. Optimization is often treated as an end-of-production task, resulting in rushed fixes and missed opportunities for improvement. By developing this automated tracking system, this talk shows how early identification of performance issues reduces optimization effort, enhances efficiency, and empowers developers to bring their vision to life.

The session shares practical insights on UE5's latest technology and their impact on performance, as well as lessons learned while implementing this automated system. Attendees will also hear about the potential of machine learning to provide precise optimization suggestions.

Speakers

Stephen is a Technical Director at Black Shamrock - a Virtuos Studio, with a career spanning back to FIFA 10, his first project. As an industry veteran, he supports a diverse range of game development efforts across Virtuos, focusing on solving complex technical challenges. His current work involves automation, performance optimization, and Unreal Engine development, helping teams streamline production and push creative boundaries.

Marios is the Director of Virtuos Labs, the specialized engineering co-development unit at Virtuos. He has a passion for game technology and commitment to helping developers realize their dream games, and coordinates projects across Virtuos studios in Europe, Asia, and North America.

Fluent in English, Mandarin, French, and Greek, Marios excels in fostering global collaboration. Under his leadership, the team has developed innovative technologies such as GPU-based cloth simulation, virtualized geometry, automated performance testing, area lights, advanced water rendering, and much more.
