Data Journalism - A Conversation with Francesca Fionda and Jens von Bergmann
Join us for an evening about Data Journalism, with Francesca Fionda, an investigative and data journalist, who has worked with investigative teams across the country including CBC, Global, CTV. She's a journalist with The Narwhal and has contributed to The Tyee, The Discourse, VICE and Canada’s National Observer, while also being an adjunct professor at UBC's journalism school. Her stories have uncovered fake Indigenous art in the tourism industry, exposed government failures in protecting sensitive health information and revealed new, in-depth data on Canada’s mobile workforce.
Francesca will share insights from her latest projects, highlighting the intersection of data and narrative. In one of those projects, a series called “Bracing for Disasters”, she collaborated with mathematician and data scientist Jens von Bergmann - you might know his company MountainMath, and he's also the head behind CensusMapper. Together they crunched the data on disaster survivors in BC. Little of the relevant data was easily available so they had to dig into various data sources, drawing on historic and current data, combining it with census data.
