Play Club September: Rossum's Universal Robots by Karel Čapek
Welcome to Play Club! For those of you that are new, this is a play club for anyone and everyone where we read a play live and then have a discussion afterwards.
This month (September) we will be reading the 1921 play Rossum's Universal Robots by Karel Čapek. (This play allegedly invented the word robot!) In R.U.R., Čapek imagines a future world where robots become the world’s workers, laboring for humans. He uses the robots’ revolt and eventual annihilation of the human race to explore what it means to be human and the purpose of human life. The working conditions of Rossum’s factory offer an opportunity to explore power dynamics created by labor.
As always, somewhere at Belvoir at 6:30pm. I'll send out an email. closer to the date with exact details.
