We’re not alone in wanting Rio to be the capital of AI in Latin America. The Prefeitura is making a serious push too, and government is key in any ecosystem. In Silicon Valley, there is always someone from the public sector at the table.
We invited the Prefeitura's leadership to talk AI with us: what Rio is building, how startups and companies can get involved, and where VCs fit into the picture. There are ways to form joint ventures with the Prefeitura or make it your next AI client.
We’ll sit down with Tatiana Roque, Rio’s Secretary of Science, Technology and Innovation, Eduardo Paes’ tech bff, and João Carabetta, CTO at Prefeitura do Rio and CEO of Iplan.Rio, to talk about AI in Rio and the government’s role in it all.

Tatiana Roque; leading Rio’s Secretary of Science, Technology and Innovation; focused on Rio.AI. (not to be confused with Rio AI City... too many AI projects in one city, gosh), an AI-dedicated hub for Rio to export AI services to other cities.
She's also a math professor at UFRJ, holds a PhD in Production Engineering, and won a Prêmio Jabuti for her book on the history of mathematics.
João Carabetta; leading Iplan.Rio (the tech brain of the Prefeitura)
He’s also co-founder of Base dos Dados, a leading open data platform in Brazil, and a well-known voice in public data and civic tech.
