Date: Sunday, July 31st, 2021

Time: 15:00 - 18:00 (3PM - 6PM) CAT/GMT+2

Theme: "THE UNSUNG HEROINES OF AFRICA"

“The day will come when history will speak. But it will not be the history, which will be taught in Brussels, Paris, Washington or the United Nations…

Instead, Africa will write its own history, and in both North and South it will be a history of glory and dignity”.

- Letter from Thysville Prison to Mrs. Lumumba -

About the Africa’s Women Day

Africa’s Women Day was proclaimed as a day to be commemorated during the first conference of the Pan-African Women’s Organisation (PAWO) which was held in July 1962 in Dar es Salaam Tanganyika (now known as Tanzania).

Africa’s Women Day offers a national, continental and global opportunity to recall and affirm the significant role of African women in the evolution of a strong Pan-African identity, with shared values, objectives and vision for the future, as well as women being key contributors towards achieving Africa’s inclusive growth and sustainable development agenda anchored in the AU vision of an integrated prosperous and peaceful Africa.

PAWO is a representative organisation of women on the African continent having presence in all 55 Member States of the African Union, with five regional offices.

Its objectives, amongst others are:

  • To strive to achieve effective and responsible participation of African women in the socio-economic and cultural development of Africa;

  • To pursue the struggle for the representation of women at decision-making levels;

  • To fight for women’s empowerment and for the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women.

Four countries have so far hosted the headquarters of PAWO since its formation: Mali (1962- 1968); Algeria (1968-1986); and Angola (1986-2008). Since 2008 its headquarters are located in Pretoria, South Africa.

Why Attend The “60th Africa's Women Day Celebration?

Did you know that Africa’s Women Day has been in existence since 1962?

Did you also know that Africa is a continent filled with untold stories of female heroes?

Did you know that before America had its first vice president (after 244 years of independence), Africa already had 26 Female presidents and Prime ministers?

Did you know that Africa had its first Prime Minister (Honourable Elisabeth Domitien, from 1975-1976) before Britain had Margret Thatcher?

Africa's Women Day focuses on spotlighting the legacy of African Women, and aims to honor each of them for their visionary, bold and pioneering historical achievements and contribution to Africa and world history.

Because of the peculiar nature of our history, the roles of the African woman in it, it is important to raise awareness of the importance and existence of Africa Women's Day.
