About Event

โ€‹Join the next Slow AI Research Rendezvous hosted collectively by the Slow AI Research Leads. Together weโ€™ll hear about the research so far on Small AI ๐Ÿœ, Ancestral AI ๐Ÿš, and Esoteric AI ๐Ÿ”ฎ, and invite you to share your feedback, questions, and side quests.

โ€‹ABOUT SLOW AI PROJECT

โ€‹In this project, we will interrogate and publish critical AI discourse in a format that makes sense to us and our practices, namely zines and creative technology installations. Inspired by the counter-movements of slow fashion and slow food, this project will investigate three emerging AI counter-narratives โ€“Small AI ๐Ÿœ, Ancestral AI ๐Ÿš, and Esoteric AI ๐Ÿ”ฎย โ€“ and explore what it might look like to incorporate them in our everyday practice.

โ€‹At project end we will publish an anthology โ€“ a hot compost pile of miro boards, zines, and art that we hope sparks new ways to think and talk about AI.

โ€‹ABOUT THE SESSION

โ€‹In this second community session of the project we will:

โ€‹> listen to each research lead sharing their thoughts in progress, questions and themes after their first month of research
> rotate across breakout rooms spending a bit of time with each stream & research lead:

โ€‹๐Ÿ”ฎ In the Esoteric AI space Natalia will invite you to trouble together the mainstream AI imaginary by exploring (even if it means occasionally getting lost) and reimagining what Esoteric AI is and can be. We will summon ideas, memes, quotes, and imaginative threads while gathered around a pre-enchanted deck of images and signs.

โ€‹๐Ÿœ In the Small AI space Nadia invites you to share in provocations around small data and technology intertwined in ecosystems to begin to carve out possibilities for Small AI together. We will look at cases and all things on the internet to see where our inspirations and aesthetics align.

โ€‹๐Ÿš In the Ancestral AI space we will remember and honor what was forgotten or lost while inviting everyone to collectively imagine and shape our heritage for the future. Together, we'll embark on a collective dreamweaving.

โ€‹โ€‹> invite you to build on the research so far, roam around the board, and add any references, associations, and ponderings
> wrap together, reflect on the conversations, and share what's next

โ€‹See you there!

โ€‹๐Ÿ”ฎ ESOTERIC AI w/ NATALIA

โ€‹Natalia Stanusch is the research lead for the Esoteric AI stream. In her research, Natalia Stanusch is interested in studying digital media artifacts by way of critical theory. Stanusch wrote and presented on topics such as memes, algorithmic imaginaries and AI counter-imaginaries, datafication practices, algorithmic auditing, digital alienation, and the ontology of digital images. She is an author of book chapters, articles, and video essays which range in scope from methodological interventions to autoethnographic experimental pieces. Stanuschโ€™s research foci meet at a crossing of critical data and algorithm studies, science and technology studies, digital visual culture, and art history. In her practice, Stanusch often brings together twentieth-century avant-garde legacies and media studies. Currently a PhD candidate at ASCA, University of Amsterdam, Stanusch has also been an academic coordinator for a non-profit DataEthics[dot]eu.

โ€‹๐Ÿœ SMALL AI w/ NADIA

โ€‹Nadia Nadesan is the research lead for the Small AI stream. Nadia is a fellow at Open Future and a collaborator at Platoniq with experience as a researcher, illustrator, facilitator, urbanist, and technologist. Her work focuses on civic technology, data governance, and public space. As a founder of Design Justice Mediterranea, She is actively involved in creating collective spaces of resistance, knowledge sharing, and community. She has worked as a researcher under Akwugo Emejulu on the project โ€˜To Exist is to Resistโ€™. Her latest project with Algorights at the Jornadas DAR developed citizen modes of participation in AI governance facilitating a citizen assembly around the AI Act in Europe. Her research currently focuses on the materiality of artificial intelligence and frictions where technology encounters local sociopolitical and cultural contexts. She enjoys projects and networks that encourage re-learning, reorienting, and reclaiming narratives of who and why we are, especially how we tech and eat.

โ€‹๐Ÿš ANCESTRAL AI w/ GUST

โ€‹Gustavo Nogueira de Menezes is the research lead for the Ancestral AI stream. Gust is an artist, researcher, and activist, questioning our relationship with time as individuals, and as a society. With a background in communication, design, and technology. Today with 17 years of professional experience, and knowledge spanning several disciplines. Invited to participate in events and festivals to co-create with global brands, platforms, and media companies that are on the quest to discover new temporalities to shape the next narratives for our planet, and collectively address the social, ecological, and economic chronic crisis.
