Policy Labs: Bringing Evidence Closer to Public Policy-Making
Overview: Join us for this dynamic session on Policy Lab workshops, which explores a collaborative method of delivering Policy Labs developed by the Policy Institute at King’s College London to mobilise research into policy and practice. This session explores what Policy Labs are and how to run them effectively, to increase impact from research.
The process of translating health research into policy and practice benefits is often too slow, taking an average of 17 years globally. Additionally, health policy changes fail when they have an inadequate understanding of the communities and challenges they seek to address. The Policy Institute at King’s College London has developed an innovative ‘Policy Lab’ method, which involves of convening diverse policy and practice stakeholders such as health workers, patients and policymakers, to discuss a policy challenge, assess the evidence and co-produce viable policy options.
Policy Labs have been shown to be highly successful in helping researchers mobilise their work into policy and practice. Previous Policy Lab outcomes include changes to the Mental Health Act in the UK, updated guidance on treatment for pregnancy sickness, updated international guidance on treatment of type 2 diabetes and the creation of a global coalition on paying for prevention in dentistry. The method can be adapted to different health challenges and interventions, and considers the potential for health policy and practice change in local, national and international arenas.
This workshop will be led by Dr Harriet Boulding and Tianne Haggar. Dr Harriet Boulding is a Senior Research Fellow specialising in the analysis of health systems and healthcare improvement research. She leads the health research theme at the Policy Institute and is also Senior Knowledge Mobilization Fellow at the Health and Social Care Workforce Research Unit. Tianne is a Research Associate in the Policy Institute, specialising in global health, health policy, and cross-cutting social policy.

About the Co-design support programme at the King’s Health Partners Digital Health Hub: Co-design – the process of creating and developing a product or service in collaboration with all those involved in its use – can be a highly effective way to improve digital health and care, and business outcomes. This workshop is part of a programme of co-design support offerings at the EPSRC-funded King’s Health Partners Digital Health Hub, a multi-disciplinary centre helping those interested in developing a digital health innovation from conception to implementation. We are based at the London Institute for Healthcare Engineering.
