Cinema Club: Bird (15)
Electric Medway Cinema Club presents... BIRD (dir. Andrea Arnold, 2024, 15)
🎞️ The long-awaited return to fiction filmmaking from Academy Award-winner Andrea Arnold (American Honey, Fish Tank), Bird is a tender, striking and extraordinarily surprising coming-of-age fable about marginalised life in the fringes of contemporary society. 12-year-old Bailey (astounding newcomer Nykiya Adams) lives with her devoted but chaotic single dad Bug (Barry Keoghan, Saltburn) and wayward brother Hunter in a squat in Gravesend, north Kent. Approaching puberty and seeking attention and adventure, Bailey’s fractured home life is transformed when she encounters Bird (Franz Rogowski, Passages), a mysterious stranger on a journey of his own. A wondrous portrait of the transition from childhood to adolescence that remains grounded in her typically empathetic social realism, Arnold’s latest strides to the wildly poetic rhythm of her own drum.
🍿🥤 A limited number of soft drinks and popcorn will be available to purchase, so please also feel free to bring your own!
WALKS
As part of Electric Medway's mission, we will be showing a short movie from our archives! Our first one comes from Kaths Kaff, a collective of artists working in a range of disciplines including fine art, music, sound and performance. They have worked together on intermittent collaborative projects, often with an improvisatory element, since 2020.
The WALKS videos were created by artist collective Kaths Kaff during the first COVID-19 lockdown. Artists Caitlin Rowley (Gravesend), Katie Hanning (Bristol), and Jon England (Somerset) used their daily walks as creative prompts, each documenting their experiences. Rowley developed these into 1-minute videos where everything—including the synthesiser soundtracks—derived from this documentation. The videos work both as four-minute combined pieces and as individual looping videos for social media. Sets 5-8 and 9-12 were commissioned by Electric Medway in 2021.
