While Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) as a discipline originated at Google, and was formed at that time, by a team of software engineers, with 50–60% focused on general software engineering skills, and the remaining 40–50% brought additional expertise in UNIX system internals and networking (Layers 1 to 3), its principles extend far beyond just software engineering. The team was established to effectively run the software and systems behind Google’s public services and products, focusing on their availability, latency, performance, efficiency, change management, monitoring, emergency response, and capacity planning.
Today, these foundational principles and practices can be applied across various fields, including cloud and data engineering(where its also known as Data Reliability Engineering).
