Archival Images of AI - Launch + Playtest ✂️
🌀 ABOUT THE SESSION
Tired of seeing the same blue circuit boards or shiny white robots every time someone talks about AI? Yeah, us too.
Join us for the launch of our Archival Images of AI (AIoAI) playbook. This playbook is the result of our research into how existing images – especially those from digital heritage collections – can be remixed and reused to create new images, particularly to represent AI in more realistic and compelling ways.
During this hands-on session, you'll:
Learn about the playbook and how it came together from our team of researchers and image-makers
Discover rich sources of open-licensed archival materials free for you to use on personal and commercial projects!
Get mini-tutorials from our image-makers on remix techniques like emoji annotations, digital distortion, pattern-making, and meme creation
Share your creations and feedback to continue improving the playbook's with your insights
We'll wrap up with a reflection, Q&A, and open discussion about future work and collective efforts in expanding our visual vocabulary around AI.
WHO IS HOSTING?
Your hosts include the AIxDESIGN team, Tania from Better Images of AI, and the AIoAI image-makers Zeina Saleem, Hanna Barakat, Cristobal Ascencio, Dominika Čupková, and Nadia Piet.
WHO IS THIS FOR?
Perfect for design enthusiasts, AI hotties, haters, and weirdos, art history nerds, media critics, archive lovers, visual culture scholars, or anyone interested in the intersection of AI and visual culture.
🖼️ ABOUT AIoAI
In Archival Images of AI, we're exploring how digital heritage collections can be remixed and reused to create more thoughtful images of AI. Working with designers, image-makers, and critical AI researchers, we're developing open-source tools and guidelines for creating culturally-relevant visual narratives about AI that go beyond the usual clichés.
A collaboration between AIxDESIGN and the Netherlands Institute for Sound & Vision with advisory from Better Images of AI ✨
