About Event

Join us as we welcome Natoya S. Brown (she/her) and Katrina A. Rozier (she/they) for "Navigating Sexual Self-Confidence From Adolescent To Whole Ass Adult" on Wednesday, May 1st, 2024 7:00 - 9:00PM EST via zoom.

A recording will be made available to everyone who registers for 14 days following the workshop.

About the workshop: "Navigating Sexual Self-Confidence From Adolescent to Whole Ass Adult" will provide an opportunity for participants to reflect on the harmful and often conflicting messages about sexuality and relationships that young people of color are often subjected to. In many circumstances, these messages have traditionally served as attempts to keep young people safe from sexual violence, trauma and pain. Unfortunately, these messages can also limit them from opportunities to explore their own sexuality freely, become confident in seeking sexual partners, sexual experimentation and clearly communicating their wants and needs and feeling comfortable in their own skin.

This workshop will also provide attendees with tools to start these conversations with all ages, but youth especially, and concrete steps on building sexual self confidence such as body literacy, accepting and celebrating bodily changes that come with aging bodies/postpartum bodies, and identifying situations that feel unsafe or harmful and how to confidently communicate your boundaries in those situations.

This workshop is exclusive for the Black and brown community and all attendees must identify as Black or brown.

By the end of the workshop:

  • Participants will learn the nuances of sex positivity and how it was historically defined as a product of white feminism versus what it has come to mean in communities of color.

  • Participants will be able to define body literacy as a person’s ability to recognize, interpret and respond to their individual body’s signals, changes and patterns to support their physical, mental and emotional wellness. Participants will also learn how body literacy is directly connected to self-confidence and communicating consent.

  • Participants will learn about the prevalence of shame and stigma that often accompanies free exploration of sexuality and pride of sexual identities in Black communities and how this limits the ability to build sexual sex confidence and learn about individual pleasure, and furthermore may prevent them from seeking sexual health services due to a lack of confidence and self-awareness.

This workshop is expected to run between 90 - 120 minutes.
