🗡️ About Stevei Houkāmau:
Stevei’s artwork, rooted in whakapapa, transcends personal background, embodying Māori traditions, migration from te Moana nui a kiwa (the Pacific Ocean), and spiritual connections between Atua (deities) and tāngata (people).
Stevei Houkāmau, Ngāti Porou, Te Whanau-a-Apanui, is a full-time artist based in Te Whanganui-a-tara, specializing in Uku (Clay). Her journey began in 2011 at Toihoukura in Te Tairawhiti. In 2021, she became a full-time artist, dedicated to exploring the concept of “Whakapapa” through her distinctive carved designs.
Recently awarded the Kiingi Tuheitia Portraiture award in 2023, Stevei continues to make significant strides in her field, with a solo exhibition at Object Space.
Reflecting on her practice, Stevei shared, “My dream was always to be a tattoo artist. Today, I cherish that I get to Ta moko Papatuanuku every day.”
