About Event

KMC Studios is very proud to present a brand new Masterclass with fellow Pōneke based potter Amanda Stowers of Masina creative.

Malaga: Sāmoan origins; meaning migration or journey. A sense of identity and connecting with family and those from the same land.

Come and create your own ceramic wall hanging that connects to you and your journey, whatever that may mean for you. Dive deep into what makes you who you are, and design a display piece reflecting what's important to your personal malaga, or journey. Learn the intricacies of relief carving from Amanda, who uses this technique for her hand carved Sāmoan tatau vessels. Participants will learn how the art of removing clay can reveal a deeper image within.

Suitable for all skill levels, from those brand new to clay & wanting to learn more to those more experienced & looking to experiment with relief carving techniques.

Artist Bio:

Amanda Stowers is the Pōneke based Sāmoan artist behind Masina Creative, named for her Nana, who was named for the moon. Amanda's work is inspired by her Sāmoan background, and the way-finding Mana of her ancestors. Her goal with Masina Creative is to always keep the culture at the forefront of the conversation, and to be the person that she needed when she was younger. Bringing representation into new spaces, where the culture can be seen, understood and appreciated. For Amanda, community is everything, and she hopes through her work she can help build stronger Pasifika communities and help others on their identity journey. Amanda works mostly with clay, creating handmade ceramic pieces featuring Sāmoan tatau motifs, with each motif being chosen for their meaning within Sāmoan culture. Made entirely by hand, Amanda's pieces are known for her intricate freehand relief carvings. Each piece she makes is unique, one of a kind, and made with alofa (love). The Mana of her ancestors pouring from her hands, through her tools and into the clay as she works.
