​Andy Martinez is our first guest on our new Skilled Labor Series on the My Climate Journey Podcast, hosted by MCJ Partner Yin Lu and special co-host Sam Steyer of Greenwork. This series is focused on amplifying the voices of folks from the skilled labor workforce, including the electricians, the farmers, the ranchers, the HVAC installers, and others who are on the front lines of rewiring our infrastructure. We decided to create this series after hearing the desire from many members of the community who wanted to learn more from folks in the trades. They’re also our first joint-AMA guests too!

​Meet Andy: Andy Martinez is an experience field performance technician and licensed electrician for Sunrun, based in Illinois. Driven by passion for solar, troubleshooting and helping people. As a field technician he repairs, installs, replaces and services different systems and equipment.

​Meet Sam: Sam Steyer is Co-Founder and CEO of Greenwork, a software startup helping climate tech companies build their construction teams, both by adding new employees and by partnering with local specialty contractors.

​In this episode, Andy, Sam and Yin dig into:

• ​Andy’s background and experience as a field technician at Sunrun, his educational journey, and day-to-day frustrations and disconnections between sales and field work.

• ​The evolution in solar technology and climate changes Andy has personally experienced.

• ​What’s working, and what’s not, in terms of companies building construction and installation teams.

• ​What jobs are needed to meet electrification demands in the US, and how to get more people into trade schools.
