About Event

As instructional designers, one of the challenges we face is creating engaging and effective learning experiences that can last for extended periods of time. Long-term learning experiences can be challenging to sustain, as learners can quickly lose motivation or become disengaged if the learning process becomes repetitive or boring. One solution to this problem is incorporating gamification into the learning experience. 🎲

Gamification can help learners develop a sense of mastery over the learning material by creating an optimal flow experience for the learner that follows a set progression system where the learners can go through highs & lows. Even better, if they can go through those tides together as community, faction or guild that collaborates collectively towards an intended purpose. 💪

In our session, I’ll be taking you through 2 gamified experiences that have been created before. One is a 5 days cohort that takes 15 learners through a game-based learning journey and the other is a 3 weeks cohort, in addition to some light shedding on a gamified campaign that spanned for 3 months.

They all share specific game mechanics to keep it running, which will be our session's focus. Why those mechanics, and how can we incorporate them in our gamified systems to keep them thriving and alive?

Hosted by Moe Ash, in this session we will:

  • Identify the foundations of cognitive load strategies that fit with cohort-based programs

  • Recognize the basic mechanics needed to keep a cohort-based learning program alive

  • List some simple tools that can aid in creating an engaging cohort-based experience
