Jeff Davis: Color 1995–2025
Curated by Grida
Exhibition Dates: June 12–21, 2025
Venue: ArtVerse Paris
Opening Reception: June 12 (Thu), 6–9PM

Over the past thirty years, Jeff Davis has developed a unique visual language grounded in color, structure, and algorithmic systems. Born in 1972 in Arlington Heights, Illinois, Davis studied painting at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he absorbed the logics of minimalism and systematic thinking. Influenced by Josef Albers’s theories on color interaction, the clarity and completeness of Sol LeWitt and Donald Judd, and the visual vibrations of Bridget Riley, Davis began his practice with traditional media—paper, ink, painting, and printmaking. In the early 1990s, he encountered digital tools such as Photoshop and Illustrator, and gradually started composing color and structure directly on screen. With the advancement of digital printing in the late 1990s, Davis recognized that digital works could exist as final pieces, not just preparatory sketches.

His interest in systems combining randomness and order led him from Excel-based experiments to the Processing programming language, allowing his works to be generated through code. Davis became an artist who thinks in code rather than brushstrokes. His algorithms are based not on complex mathematics but on simple integers, sequences, and binary logic. Within these constrained frameworks, unexpected variations quietly emerge. In his work, color never stands alone. It functions as a structural unit, constantly shaped and redefined by its interaction with surrounding hues.

JThe colors Davis builds live within the architecture of digital light. Although composed of RGB pixels, his screens lose the coldness of machinery, instead pulsating with a painterly warmth and depth. For Davis, color is not emotion itself, but the order through which emotion flows. Each work remains formally the same, yet it resonates differently depending on time, light, and viewer.

This solo exhibition, Color: 1995–2025, offers an overview of Davis’s journey from painting to algorithm, from hand to code. It presents a body of work that traverses material and immaterial realms, where color constructs space and code becomes an extension of the artist’s hand. On view at ArtVerse Paris from June 12 to 21, 2025, the exhibition invites us to quietly reconsider color, light, and the invisible structures that shape perception. The opening reception will take place on June 12 from 6 to 9 PM.
