Easter Vigil celebration
First, we'll be celebrating Easter this Saturday night after the Easter Vigil at St. Paul's. Join us in happy singing, eating and drinking, and joyous reflection at the resurrection of Christ. The mass ends around 10:30 PM and we'll walk over from St. Paul's or you're welcome to meet us at 40 Hawthorn St. at 10:45/11:00.

Second, this Tuesday we'll be hosting Jesse Sullivan to discuss how Catholics engage in political life. Jesse is an alumnus of Oxford and Stanford, ran for Governor of Illinois in 2022, and--most importantly--is a devoted husband and father.

Join the Abigail Adams Institute at Hawthorn House for a lecture series on Pope Benedict given by Father Jeff Langan. ​

Open to: This seminar is open to currently enrolled students in the Boston area. Please still register if you are not a student and we will let you know if there is additional room.

In 1947, a young Joseph Ratzinger experienced what Germans call Das Hungerjahr. During that experience he saw his way to entering a seminary and, eventually, becoming a Catholic priest who served Cardinal Frings during the Second Vatican Council. By the 1980s, he assisted John Paul II in Rome on the CDF (Congregation of Doctrine and Faith). His writings from the CDF galvanized the Catholic base in the Western world. They were happy to see him follow JP2, and just as dismayed at what Der Spiegel called his fahnenflucht.
With his recent passing, we will begin four seminars to understand and assess his life and work, with a view to conceptualizing how we can assess his life so as to plan for what to do next. He himself thought that we should avoid non-contextualized theology, and so, if we are going to assess his theological thought, it is important to do so within the context of the historical circumstances he lived and how he applied his thought to those circumstances.

Join Hawthorn House as we welcome His Excellency Archbishop Warda, the Chaldean Archbishop of Erbil in the Kurdistan region of Iraq. ​He was instrumental in the recognition of ISIS’s attacks against the Christians and Yazidis of Iraq and Syria as crimes against humanity. Alongside this mission, he is founder of Catholic University in Erbil and facilitated the first ever Papal visit to Iraq. ​Please join us for his remarks and a reception afterward.

​Join Hawthorn House as we welcome Joseph Loconte for an evening lecture on April 26th at 6:00 PM to discuss the work and lives of J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis, their experiences of war, and their efforts to defend western civilization.

​​Joseph Loconte, Ph.D., is a Senior Fellow in Christianity and Culture at the King’s College in New York City and director of the B. Kenneth Simon Center for American Studies and AWC Family Foundation Fellow at the Heritage Foundation. Mr. Loconte is the author of the New York Times bestseller A Hobbit, a Wardrobe, and a Great War: How J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis Rediscovered Faith, Friendship, and Heroism in the Cataclysm of 1914-1918. He received the 2017 Best Article award from the Tolkien Society for his New York Times article “How J.R.R. Tolkien Found Mordor on the Western Front.” He is currently producing a documentary film series based on the book. The film trailer is below:
