About Event

When you’ve spent your life in the school system, as a student, then as a parent and educator, making the shift to self-directed learning can be challenging. Whether the move is how you educate your kids, or your students, it requires a lot of unlearning and a radical shift in perspective.

Your experience of school, as a student, parent and teacher, might be the driver behind your change in approach. Seeing the impact that schooling had on you, your own kids, or on the children you teach might be WHY you want to try something different. To focus on what works best for the child, rather than the system.

But that doesn’t mean it comes easy. Years of conditioning and training need to be overcome.

And they CAN be overcome. You became an educator because you want to inspire children to be the best they can, and to show them a path to joyful learning. You want the same for your own children. THAT is entirely possible when you embrace Self Directed learning, and become a facilitator and mentor for children’s learning, rather than an authority figure passing on knowledge.

Former public school principal, Lesley Jones Sessler has over 30 years of experience in the K-12 system as an assistant superintendent, teacher, assistant principal, and nearly every role in between. Lesley currently runs her blog, WatchMonkeyMama, as a mom, educator, and homeschooler.

She is joining Galileo co-founder Kelly Davis to share what her journey has taught her about learning, education and parenting

In this discussion, Lesley will share

  • Her experiences as a principal

  • How to trust what your child is interested in and to let go

  • How children become readers without an expected reading age and

  • How important it can be for parents to deschool, in order to trust the SDE process

You’ll be able to ask Lesley questions and share your own experiences with her.
