About Event

When you see “SQL” what do you think of? Furry gray critters? Exciting data insights? Scary quant tools?

On Wednesday, June 25, Carl Pearson will be dispelling any myths around SQL and showing how this data-querying language can help any UX Researcher gain valuable insights. In fact, if you're nervous about quant or data analysis, we encourage you to try out this session and add a little quant knowledge to your toolkit.

Today, nearly every tech company (and most other large companies) keep data sets and databases that record everything from customer contact information and demographics to product sales down to color, size, and shipping location. Imagine being able to answer questions like, ‘How many customers live in Peoria, Illinois?’ or ‘Which shoe lace color is most popular in the UK?’

With SQL, even qualitative researchers can find insights and meaning in huge data sets. The language is fairly simple to learn, and understanding how SQL works will go a long way to building a great working relationship with any data science team.

You don’t have to be a quant researcher or a PhD or an expert to benefit from this session - Carl will walk through

  • what SQL is and how it works

  • different ways researchers can use SQL to parse and understand data

  • a few tips on how to make sure you’re doing it right

Carl believes any UX Researcher can learn and benefit from SQL in their work.

This session will be 40 minutes with 20 minutes for Q&A at the end. If you can stay past the hour, we encourage you to do so - we’ll offer networking breakout rooms so you can meet your peers and connect over your newfound love of SQL. The session will also be recorded and made available on our YouTube channel and via our newsletter.

Carl is an expert in applying UX research for nimble and effective product development. He’s a mixed-methods researcher by training and experience who specializes in quantitative methods (surveys, statistics, programming, etc).

Beyond helping product teams make the best decisions that they can, Carl is passionate about refining UX research methods (publishing when possible) and helping other researchers grow in their skills.

Carl holds a PhD in human factors psychology from North Carolina State University. He currently works at Reddit as a staff quantitative UX researcher, and has previously worked at Meta, UserZoom, and Red Hat. Find Carl’s articles on his website: https://carljpearson.com/ux-research-blog/
