About Event

Join us for an inspiring screening and discussion celebrating the artistry and vision of female creatives working at the intersection of nature and storytelling.

Featured Film

WASKA: The Forest is My Family, Director: Nina Gualinga Co-Directors: Boloh Miranda, Elizabeth Swanson, Ecuador, (2025)

The plant medicine hayakwaska (ayahuasca), marketed as a mystical shortcut to healing and enlightenment, is an example of what the Indigenous storyteller Nina Gualinga, sees as commodification and extractivism in the Amazon. Nina is from the Kichwa people of Sarayaku, Ecuador, and she speaks with the memory of her shaman grandfather about the ongoing cultural appropriation, environmental destruction and marginalisation of her people, questioning our very relationship to the Earth and the quest for healing

Following the screening, join filmmaker, co-founder of Earthrise Studio and Nat Geo Explorer Alice Aedy for an intimate discussion. Known for her compelling documentaries, Alice will guide an insightful conversation about the creative challenges and artistic choices involved in capturing nature's stories.

Speakers

  • Jess Gormley, Executive Producer, Guardian Documentaries.

  • Sophie Darlington, Wildlife Cinematographer ASC

  • Liz Bonnin, Wild Animal Biologist, Science & Natural History Broadcaster

The discussion will delve into the unique perspectives women bring to filmmaking, the evolving craft of nature documentary, and the delicate balance between artistic vision and environmental advocacy that defines this genre.

This session celebrates not just the final product, but the artistic journey—from initial vision to the craft of storytelling that brings these critical nature narratives to life.
