About Event

Join us as we welcome Dr. Shemeka Thorpe (She/Her) for What Do We Know? Black Women's Orgasms and Pleasure on Tuesday, April 6th from 7:00 to 9:00PM EST over Zoom! This workshop is a part of The CSPH's Sex Education for Professionals track. The content of this workshop is best suited for sexuality professionals and professionals in allied fields.

What does sex-positive research on Black women's sexuality tell us about their orgasms and pleasure? In this session we will learn more about facilitators and barriers to Black women's orgasms and pleasure throughout their lifespan. The work of Black sex researchers will be highlighted.

Through this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • will be able to describe the current state of sex positive research on Black women's sexual pleasure and orgasms; and

  • be more knowledgeable about factors that contribute to Black women's orgasms and sexual pleasure.

About Dr. Shemeka Thorpe

Dr. Shemeka Thorpe (she/her) is a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Kentucky. She obtained her PhD in Community Health Education from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Her research focuses on the sexual well-being of Black women utilizing sex-positive and intimate justice frameworks. She has also published research on college students' sexual health and hookup culture. Understanding the importance of translating research into practice, Dr. Thorpe co-founded the Minority Sex Report, LLC an award-winning platform designed to provide representation in sexuality education to Black and Native American women. She currently serves on the editorial board for the American Journal of Sexuality Education and is a member of the Women of Color Sexual Health Network (WoSCHN).

Tickets are available on a sliding scale ($3-$30) to ensure folx of varying economic backgrounds are able to access the sex education they deserve. We ask those who have the financial means to help "spread the wealth" by contributing to the community pool so that we can offer a limited number of sponsored free tickets to those who need it.
