About Event

Welcome back, friends!
Get ready to dive into the wild world of plastics at Climate North: Plastics Unwrapped

Join us on January 28th from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM. This event promises to be anything but ordinary. We're peeling back the layers of plastics—those sneaky little devils that are everywhere, from your morning coffee cup to the ocean's depths. Expect a night filled with eye-opening revelations as we tackle the big questions: Why are plastics so ubiquitous? What impact are they having on us and our planet? And, most importantly, how can we rise to the challenge of reducing their footprint? Whether you're a seasoned eco-warrior or just curious about the plastic problem, this event is for you. So, bring your questions, your curiosity, and maybe a reusable cup, and let's get unwrapping!

6:00pm – Doors Open, Meet & Greet

6:30pm -  Madeleine Milne, research findings and observations related to microplastics

As plastic use continues to grow, microplastics have emerged as a widespread contaminant, infiltrating nearly every corner of our environment. Madeleine will talk about the current state of plastic and microplastic pollution science, highlighting what we know and what is still to come for the field.

Madeleine Milne is a Master’s student at the University of Manitoba where she investigates the movement and effects of microplastics on freshwater ecosystems. Her passion for microplastics research began during her undergraduate studies at the University of Toronto, where she explored contamination in fish from the Toronto Harbour and later investigated microplastics in grocery store food. Madeleine also dedicates time to community outreach as a volunteer ambassador with the University of Toronto Trash Team, a science-based community outreach organization focused on tackling plastic pollution through education and solutions-driven research.

7:05pm – Karen Wirsig: Reducing plastic pollution's impact at every stage.
To tackle the crisis of plastic pollution we need to come to grips with the fact that every stage of the lifecycle of plastic, from the extraction of oil and gas to the use of products and disposal of plastic waste, causes harm to our environment and our health. Karen will lay out a holistic approach to reducing the production and use of plastics in our economy and in our lives.

Karen is Senior Program Manager for Plastics at Environmental Defence and previously worked as a journalist and as a labour and community organizer. She is passionate about getting plastics out of the environment.

7:30pm - Scott Morrison: reducing single-use plastics with a circular model

Scott is the Developing Partner of Muuse.io

Since 2018, Muuse, has been partnering with businesses, municipalities, and forward-thinkers to embed reuse and return into the heart of society. They envision a world where nothing is wasted, and every resource is valued, circulating seamlessly within the reuse revolution.
