Frequently Asked Questions

When does the class start, and can I join on different dates? Classes are held every Thursday night and will continue for the foreseeable future. You can start your block any Thursday that suits you, subject to availability.
For one-off explorer folks, please book your ticket for the specific night you wish to attend.

I’m a total newbie, are these sessions suitable for me? Absolutely! We have 7 pre-planned making nights perfect for beginners, covering basics like pinching, slab building, coiling, and even sculpture. We also offer creative surface decorating nights featuring techniques like stamping, mark making, underglaze, sgraffito, mishima, and the use of sprig molds. Each 5-week block includes a glazing class to ensure you can complete your works in a timely manner.

I have a child who is keen on pottery; are these sessions suitable for them?
Absolutely! We welcome young enthusiasts to our sessions. Due to the evening timeframe, all youth under 16 years old must attend with an adult. Special arrangements can also be made on a case-by-case basis to accommodate young participants. Please contact us to discuss how we can best serve your family’s needs. We’re excited to foster a love of ceramics in artists of all ages!

I'm a trip pass holder and one of my friends or family members wants to come along; can I bring them?
Absolutely! Our Single Session Explorer tickets are perfect for this. They allow your friends or family to join you for a session, so you can share the joy and creativity of pottery together.

I've attended one night with an Explorer ticket and want to continue; are there any special perks for me?
We’re delighted you’re considering more sessions with us! If you purchase a 5-trip, 7-trip, or 10-trip pass within 7 days of attending your Explorer night, we offer a special promotional bonus: the price of your Explorer ticket ($145) will be credited towards your new pass. This effectively gives you a $145 discount on your pass, making it an excellent opportunity to commit to more creativity at a great value.

How do I book my weeks if I’m using a trip pass? Upon purchasing your trip pass, you’ll receive a special coupon code. Our classes are listed in a special online calendar, allowing you to book as many classes in advance as you need using your code.

What if I use up all my tickets and need an extra day to complete my works or need more time off due to illness? No problem at all! Make-up classes are available at a discounted rate of only $60. This fee ensures that our tutors are compensated for their time and helps keep our class quality high.

Are materials and tools provided? Yes, your ticket includes all the necessary materials and tools for the session. This includes a generous amount of clay, use of tools and equipment, and kiln firing for your projects. Additional materials and extra kiln space are available for a small fee.

What if I have more advanced skills? Our sessions are designed to cater to all skill levels. Advanced participants can work on more complex projects and are encouraged to experiment with new techniques. Our skilled instructors are available to provide guidance tailored to your experience level.

Can I bring my own tools or clay? While we provide all necessary materials and tools, you are welcome to bring your own specialised tools. However, all clay must be approved by the studio to ensure it meets our kiln requirements, if you have your own clay that you'd like to use please send us an email at studio@karlamarie.nz or bring it with you to a making night so we can assist you in assessing your clay and making a test piece that can be fired on a special cookie in the kiln.

Is there a cancellation policy? Yes, we understand that plans can change. You can cancel your booking up to 24 hours before your session for a full transfer. Cancellations made less than 24 hours before the session will not be eligible for a transfer.

I see my trip pass includes a Show and Tell session. What if I don't want to attend? All of our classes, including Show and Tell, are optional. We highly recommend attending Show and Tell, as it is an invaluable part of the learning and community experience. It provides a set date to aim to have works completed for firing and is an excellent opportunity for collecting finished works. Additionally, it's a wonderful time to celebrate successes with your peers.

Can I attend more than one Show and Tell session if I find it beneficial?
Absolutely! You are welcome to attend additional Show and Tell sessions, even if your pass has been fully utilised. These sessions are perfect for gaining inspiration from the works of others, discussing techniques, and celebrating creativity within our community. If you have pieces to collect, please contact the studio in advance so we can have your creations ready for you. We encourage and appreciate your enthusiasm and engagement in our ceramic community!

What happens if a class is full on the day I want to book? Our classes have limited spots to ensure personalised attention and quality teaching. If a class is full, please reach out asap as sometimes we are able to accomodate extra friends if we have sufficient tutors on hand.

Is there a wait list for full classes? Yes. If you wish to be placed on a waiting list, please contact us directly. We'll notify you if a spot becomes available.

Can I switch from a Flexi Pass to a Loyalty Pass if I find I’m attending regularly? Switching pass types is possible at the end of your current pass’s duration. If you find you are attending regularly and would benefit from a Loyalty Pass, you can purchase it for your next block of sessions.
