What is the Platform Economy?
The platform economy is driven by digital platforms—apps, marketplaces, and technologies that connect freelancers, businesses, and customers. From Uber and Bolt in ride-hailing, to Upwork and Fiverr for freelancing, and Jumia and Etsy for e-commerce, these platforms are transforming how people work, trade, and earn.
In Africa, the platform economy is unlocking new opportunities for individuals to scale businesses and access global markets. However, barriers remain, including:
Limited Digital & Financial Inclusion – A 37% mobile internet gap in Sub-Saharan Africa excludes over 190 million people from digital work.
Precarious Work Conditions – Many platform workers lack contracts, job security, and social protections, increasing economic vulnerability.
Legal & Policy Gaps – The absence of fair labor policies leads to unequal pay, safety risks, and discrimination.
Workplace Equity & Safety Concerns – Many workers, particularly women, face harassment, wage theft, and job insecurity.
The Opportunity
The global gig economy is valued at $3.7 trillion (2023), with Africa’s digital workforce rapidly expanding. By building inclusive, fair, and sustainable solutions, we can bridge these gaps and create a thriving digital workforce for all.
