Post-screening Talk:

Performance Art in Beijing East Village, 1993-1995

Guest Speaker: Zhu Ming

Zhu Ming was born in 1972 in Changsha, Hunan, and now lives in Beijing. Wikipedia says he graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts, but that’s wrong. Zhu Ming told me himself that he only finished high school, then came to Beijing and moved into East Village. He said he really doesn’t like it when internet makes up his wrong bio.

Back in 1993, when he was looking for rentals in Beijing, he met Zhang Huan. Later, he, Zhang Huan, and Ma Liuming decided to rent in the same village, so the three performance artists all ended up living in East Village, Beijing.

In the year 2000, Zhu Ming curated China’s first performance art festival —“OPEN Performance Art Festival” in Beijing—with Li Xianting as the academic chair. That fall, he helped Ai Weiwei curate the “Fuck Off” exhibition in Shanghai. When I saw Zhu Ming this summer, he told me he was moving out SongZhuang Art Colony as well, after his 20 years. But there once were lots of interesting things happening in East Village times. And just like that, thirty years gone by.
