6/11 Asian American Art Club: Letters to our Fathers
Asian American Art Club invites you to our weekly gatherings. This week, we will be using our time to write letters to our fathers.
Father’s Day is on Sunday, June 15, and as a grieving daughter whose 아빠 (father) died in 2023, for me, this day is shrouded in grief, anxiety, overwhelm, and complicated emotions.
For our grievers, I wanted to create a grief practice and ritual for us to metabolize our grief in the company of others. For all of us, I wanted to create a safe space for us to reflect on our relationships with our fathers.
Living fathers. Deceased fathers. Absent fathers. Present fathers. Estranged fathers. Fathers from which we have chosen estrangement. Sensitive fathers. Stoic fathers. Emotionally present fathers. Fathers we've never known. Fathers of which we have few or no memories. Supportive fathers. Distant fathers. Ailing fathers. Beloved fathers.
For me, 아빠 could've fit into a lot of these categories at different times in our lives. What about you?
Here's the setup:
A virtual meeting via Google Meet
A creative workshop for Asian Americans to write letters to their fathers in preparation for Father's Day
An opportunity to share their letters or their feelings about the letter-writing process
An opportunity to connect with other Asian Americans who want to develop a creative practice
Agenda:
Arrival + Introduction: 12:00 - 12:10 pm
Letter Writing: 12:10 - 12:40 pm
Reflections + Conclusion: 12:40 - 1:00 pm
