Next Generation of Exploration Speaker Showcase
Location for this event is the 550 Studio space in the back of The Commons.
Join us at The Commons to hear from members of the Explorers Club NGEN (Next Generation of Exploration)
The event will be MCed by Explorers Club NorCal Chapter Chair Jimmy Friedman who will navigate the opening, transitions, Q&As, and wrap up. Each speaker will have roughly 10 minutes to present followed by 3 minutes of Q&A. The event will be roughly hour-long and followed by mingling.
Our speakers are:
- Taylor Griffith: "Art and Science Collide: Ocean-Inspired Art"
Taylor Griffith is an award-winning artist, underwater photographer, and cinematographer dedicated to telling stories that examine human relationships with the ocean. Projects Taylor has worked on have been featured across the world including galleries, museums, streaming platforms, The Explorers Club, the United States Congress, and the United Nations.
- Satya Gontcho A Gontcho: "The Oldest Movie: A Story Told by Our Universe"
Satya Gontcho A Gontcho Ph.D. is a cosmologist at Berkeley and a Kavli Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences. Her work is at the forefront of the efforts to build the largest three-dimensional map of the observable universe ever made by mankind in order to shed light on the nature of dark energy, the force responsible for the accelerated expansion of the universe. She brings together her expertise as a scientist, educator and performance artist to explore the ways storytelling can be adapted to reach a broad audience and steer the public’s attention towards the wonder of the universe in which we live. - Grace Cordsen: "The Painted Ladies of Port Lockroy: Exploring the Intersection of Necessity, Science, and Art in Antarctica"
Arctic and Antarctic specialist, Grace was one of the youngest women to manage a camp in the Antarctic. Grace has cumulatively over a year living in both polar regions through her research endeavors and work as an educational coordinator and leader for expeditions. Her research, writing, and art is multifaceted and focuses on the intersection of art, history, science, climate change, and sustainability.
- Jack Carlson: "Rome & China: Images, Monuments and Imperial Power"
Jack Carlson is a designer, author, archaeologist, and former coxswain on the U.S. rowing team. He is the founder of the brand Rowing Blazers and led the revival of heritage brands Warm & Wonderful and Arthur Ashe. A three-time member of the U.S. national rowing team, Jack won a bronze medal at the 2015 World Championships and won both the Head of the Charles and Henley Royal Regatta in 2013. Jack has a doctorate in archaeology from Oxford and an undergraduate degree from the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown. He worked as a field archaeologist in Italy and has written on a variety of topics, from iron age weapons to the Arch of Constantine. His work has been published in Antiquity, Foreign Policy, and GQ. Jack is a Fellow of The Explorers Club and a Life Member of the Archaeological Institute of America.
