About the Talk:
From pen and paper, through satellites, code and animation. How The New York Times stories combine traditional tools with cutting-edge technology using tools we often build from scratch in-house.

About the Speaker:
Marco Hernandez is a Graphics Editor for The New York Times. He has worked in newsrooms for over 20 years, including Reuters in Singapore; La Nación in Costa Rica and The South China Morning Post in Hong Kong. Marco has received hundreds of international awards, including “World’s Best Designer” from the Society for News Design in 2021. He won the 2023 and 2024 Pulitzer Prize for covering the war in Ukraine and Gaza. In 2023, Ball State University awarded Marco the Majeri Award for innovation and leadership in journalism in Indiana, USA. Marco makes tutorials in his spare time, and enjoys doing illustrations and maps for fun which he publishes on multiple blogs on weekends. As a former Information Design lecturer, Marco finds it rewarding to help students and create opportunities for professional growth.
