Building a self service data platform is a very challenging task, mainly because it requires a shift in the company mindset. It starts by understanding who are the targeted audience that would interact with the platform, architecting it to be opinionated enough to enforce data mesh principles but not too complicated to risk impacting the velocity, embedding governance tools to ensure that the data would be with correct, tested, performant and cost efficient and eventually making sure the consumers could easily find what they are looking for and gain enough trust to either use it in their customer facing dashboard, or build their own pipeline on top if it.
Those were, and still are, the challenges we are facing daily when developing the data platform at Yotpo. The talk will walk you through the journey we embarked on a few years ago, sharing our successes but also many of our failures, focusing mostly on the holistic, reliable and cost efficient self service data platform that we are building.
