This year's Rare Effect theme is obsolescence—
Technology in the 21st century is often associated with speed, progress, development, and growth. However, in our haste to accelerate advancement it seems we have glossed over an integral question— where is the human on this racetrack? Where is the planet? Have we out-innovated ourselves and our environment? Recent and exponential advancements in artificial intelligence and machine learning, coupled with the growing climate crisis and armed conflicts, may suggest so. The consequences of our accelerated development often fall hardest on those most vulnerable, as we witness massive forced displacement and acquiescence towards ongoing atrocities.
Continuing to build upon the theme of migration we explored in 2022, we are now expanding the conversation to the wider reality of obsolescence. The deterioration of cultural and natural ecologies has become increasingly apparent, and we feel that it is urgent to situate ourselves within this reality. Imagining hopeful or dire extremes, art helps us to address our position within the world we inhabit, while providing possible avenues for adaptability, perseverance, and resilience.
A special thank you to CCDR LVT for their support of Rare Effect 2024.
