About Event

We’re thrilled to announce that Erum and Karl from MessagingLab will join us for a fireside/podcast event this Weds at 11am/2pm PT/ET. As they put on their website “Consider us your fractional Chief Marketing Officer” - this is a great articulation and they are clearly excellent at what they do. This stuff is important for scientists and innovators, so it’s a gift that they will come and share their knowledge with the community.

Karl and Erum run the Grow Everything Podcast, now well-over 100 episodes, which is one of our favorites here at Homeworld. Just by looking at their guests, you can see they are friends and professional colleagues with many of the best firms in climate biotech.

So why would a professor or postdoc or startup newco possibly want to think about MARKETING? What does that even have to do with getting your experiments to work? It all comes down to storytelling: If you do great work but nobody cares, you will struggle to recruit talent and capital.  We at Homeworld see this as an essential skill of empowerment, and understanding the basic mental models that Karl+Erum do for their clients can be an unlock for the innovator.

From my personal experience, getting people to care about your story is an essential yet subtly difficult art. In this conversation, I hope we can lay out some big ideas in the “enough to be dangerous” direction, but then also explore some of the more advanced case studies.

Karl Schmieder, MS/MFA, is the founder and CEO of Messaginglab, award-winning author. His professional range is from the tiniest to the biggest companies.

Erum Azeez Khan is a partner at Messaginglab. She started her career in big pharma developing therapeutics before leading a digital health company from fundraise to exit as co-founder/CEO.

They also both have technical backgrounds in biochemistry so we can geek out at full volume!
