June is Stroke Awareness Month in Canada.
🧠About 878,500 Canadian adults aged 20+ have experienced a stroke, that is 438,700 men and 439,800 women (according to national data from 2017–18)
👨👩👧👦 One-quarter of Canadians living with stroke are under age 65
🧑🏾🦼More than 400,000 Canadians are living with long-term disability from the effects a stroke.
👩🏾Strokes disproportionately affect women with 59% of stroke deaths occurring in the female population.

About our guest speaker
Dr. Sandhya Urvashy Gopaul is a physiotherapist and holds a MSc in Physiotherapy-Neurorehabilitation (University of Nottingham, UK) and PhD in Physiotherapy (University of Newcastle, Australia). She was previously a tenured faculty at the University of Mauritius for 7 years leading the physiotherapy education program before she relocated to Canada.
Dr. Gopaul is currently a post-doctoral researcher at the KITE Research Institute, Toronto Rehabilitation Institute- University Health Network, Canada. She is also an Associate Graduate Faculty at the Rehabilitation Sciences Institute, University of Toronto. Her research program focuses on the development of complex neurorehabilitation approaches integrating somatosensory, motor and cognitive training using clinical restorative therapy and advanced rehabilitation technology such as robotic training, haptic training using pressure sensors and neuromodulation modalities such as spinal cord stimulation after stroke and other neurological conditions. She has a strong interest in life after stroke in young people and was awarded the Canadian StrokeCog post-doctoral fellowship award to support her research.
Dr Gopaul has been actively involved with the World Stroke Organisation through the Future Leaders Program where she contributed to 5 international collaborations from low to high income countries. Dr. Gopaul is also an active member of the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine where she has led several projects within the Aging Research and Geriatric Rehabilitation Networking Group. She is also an Emerging Leader of the International Stroke Recovery and Rehabilitation Alliance (ISRRA) Emerging Leaders program (2023-2028) and collaborates with researchers worldwide to address major challenges in stroke recovery and rehabilitation.
