About Event

Small-scale farmers and fishers are on the frontlines of climate change, economic instability, and resource conflict, yet they play a critical role in global food security and environmental stewardship. How can we shift the narrative to recognize them as entrepreneurs and changemakers rather than vulnerable communities? How do we ensure that sustainable agriculture, regenerative practices, and inclusive market systems create long-term, climate-resilient livelihoods?

This session will explore the nexus of agriculture, climate change, gender, and health, focusing on narrative change, behavior shifts, and innovative strategies that promote rural farmers and fishers as key drivers of economic growth and environmental sustainability. Participants will discuss the role of sustainable agriculture in preventing conflict, enhancing food security, and fostering economic stability, as well as how industries like coffee and fisheries can embrace regenerative models that benefit people and the planet.

Key Questions:

  • How can narrative change help reposition smallholder farmers and fishers as entrepreneurs and climate leaders?

  • What sustainable agricultural practices create economic opportunities while promoting peace and environmental resilience?

  • How can behavior change strategies support rural communities in adapting to climate challenges?

  • What role do gender equality and health initiatives play in building resilient smallholder farming communities?

  • How can industries like coffee and fisheries integrate regenerative agriculture and fair market access to support small-scale producers?

This interactive discussion will bring together farmers, advocates, policymakers, and business leaders to explore sustainable, climate-smart solutions that drive economic development, food security, and peacebuilding in rural communities.

Session Co-Leaders:

  • Benedicto Hosea – CEO of Mboni ya Vijana, a climate-resilient agriculture initiative empowering rural communities in Tanzania.

  • Jackie Finch – Senior Director of Philanthropy at Heifer International, working to build sustainable food systems and economic resilience for smallholder farmers.

  • Naum Butoto Bigiri – CEO & Founder of UGEAFI, a leader in humanitarian aid, community development, and conflict transformation in the Great Lakes region.

  • Nic Lauten – Executive Director of Kula Project, leading sustainable entrepreneurship programs for smallholder farmers in Rwanda.

  • Tom Hoyle – Adviser at GenEM Foundation, specializing in blended finance for sustainable livelihoods and nature-based enterprises.

  • Angela Kirkman – VP of Rare, leading global foundation relations to drive sustainable development, marine conservation, and social impact.
