Designing Innovation to Action: Life, Leadership, and AI Program Overview

In the age of AI and high uncertainty, business leaders are increasingly faced with a myriad of challenges and opportunities for which existing strategies and approaches no longer apply. Leaders must be able to encourage and harness new ideas and drive them forward to create actionable innovation. Actionable innovation requires leaders who can power their teams to explore, adapt, and engage with emerging technologies. All levels of an organization, from executives to middle managers to individual contributors must be able to “connect the dots” to ensure the best ideas for innovation are translated into work being done, that is aligned to the overall strategy, and is adding value to the business. And it starts with leaders themselves learning to use innovation to power their own individual aspirations in designing their life.

"Designing Innovation into Action: Life, Leadership and AI" has been developed and is delivered by innovation thought leaders and industry experts from Stanford University, Silicon Valley, and beyond. The highly interactive program explores the critical mindsets and skillsets required of business leaders to drive innovation in their organizations. Anchored around the Stanford methodology for design thinking, this practical, action-based learning experience provides a recipe that immediately allows participants to apply their insights and learning in their own lives, as well as begin to embed practices for their team and their organizations.

Program Objectives

The program has been designed so you learn:

  • Fundamentals of design thinking, providing the foundation for their innovation efforts.

  • How to leverage innovation for personal and professional growth throughout their careers.

  • How to create the environment that allows innovation to flourish, and enables teams to deliver innovative products, services, and solutions.

  • Understand the impact of AI on innovation and leadership.

Module Themes and Descriptions

The program consists of modules that focus on the following four key themes:

  1. Innovation Tune-up
You will learn the basics of design thinking by doing an end-to-end project to understand the steps in the process: Empathize; Define; Ideate; Build; Test. You’ll practice empathy to understand the problem/opportunity, generating ideas to redefine the problem, identifying potential solutions, prototyping, and testing.

  2. Designing Yourself as an Innovation Leader
You will learn how to assess who you are as a leader, what your authentic leadership style is, and how you manage your time and energy. This is used to design your balance and energy for effective leadership and help you define your leadership view - your style of leadership.

  3. Converting Innovation into Action
You will learn how to create the environment that allows innovation to flourish and enables teams to deliver innovative products, services, and solutions to your customers. You will develop an actionable roadmap and learn techniques for planning, delivering, and measuring your innovation efforts.

  4. AI and Innovation
You will explore AI, the impact of AI on innovation, and the implications for leadership so that you can begin to leverage the potential and the promise of artificial intelligence.

Stanford Design Executive Program, initiated by Patten University in partnership with Stanford University, will be held at Stanford University on August 19-23. In the age of AI and high uncertainty, business leaders face many challenges and opportunities. Stanford D. School professor, Executive Director of the Life Design Lab, and well-known author Bill Burnett was the keynote speaker. The program is designed for all levels of an organization, from executives to middle managers to individual contributors. It has been developed and is delivered by innovation thought leaders and industry experts from Stanford University, Silicon Valley, and beyond!
