Panels:

  • Derek Lowe, is the director of Chemical Biology Therapeutics at Novartis Institute for Biomedical Research (NIBR). His industry experience includes 10 years to Vertex, 9 years at Bayer and 8 years at Schering-Plough as a medicinal chemistry lab head, project leader, and specialist in new drug discovery technologies. Derek's columns and articles appear in Chemistry World, Contract Pharma, Pharmaceutical Executive, Genome Technology, and other publications. He is also the author of the widely-read industry science and industry website "In the Pipeline", quoted in Forbes, Fortune, the Wall Street Journal, etc. His specialties include drug discovery research experience in oncology, metabolic disease, Alzheimer's, infectious disease and other therapeutic areas. He also focuses on target experience in kinases, proteases, GPCRs, ion channels, nuclear receptors, and many additional categories. He is often dubbed as the ‘reality check guy’ on the controversial topic of AI drug discovery. 

  • Anne Carpenter, is an Institute Scientist at the Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT. Her research group develops algorithms and strategies for large-scale experiments involving images. The team’s open-source CellProfiler software is used by thousands of biologists worldwide and their Cell Painting assay has been adopted throughout the pharma industry to accelerate drug discovery, including as a foundational technology for Recursion and SyzOnc. She leads industry-wide consortia such as JUMP-Cell Painting and OASIS. Her PhD is in cell biology from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign and her postdoc in high-throughput image analysis was at the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research and MIT’s CSAIL (Computer Sciences/Artificial Intelligence Laboratory). Carpenter has been named an NSF CAREER awardee, an NIH MIRA awardee, and is listed in Deep Knowledge Analytics’ top-100 AI Leaders in Drug Discovery and Advanced Healthcare.

  • Jen Nwankwo, PhD, is the Founder & CEO of 1910 Genetics, a Boston-based, Series A stage biotechnology company that is advancing small and large molecule drug discovery with a multimodal Al platform powered by laboratory automation. Prior to 1910 Genetics, Jen was a Management Consultant at Bain & Company and Director of Business Development at Transparency Life Sciences. She received her Ph.D. in Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics from Tufts University School of Medicine, and conducted part of her doctoral research at the Boston Children's Hospital of Harvard Medical School. Jen was recently named by Endpoints News as one of the "Top 20 Women in Biopharma R&D" and one of "52 Women-Led Startups Driving The Future of HealthTech and FemTech" by Forbes Magazine.

  • Alex Snyder, is the Executive Vice President, Research & Development for Generate:Biomedicines, overseeing all clinical matters. With extensive clinical experience and a focus on patient care, she has a strong record of leading teams in developing diverse medicines. She also serves as a voluntary faculty member at Bellevue Hospital and New York University. Previously, Alex was a Principal at the private equity firm Two River, managing translational and clinical strategies for biotech companies. She was also the Head of Translational Oncology at Merck, directing global clinical trials and related strategies. Alex graduated from Princeton University with a degree in history and a minor in music. She earned her medical degree from Mount Sinai Medical School with highest honors, and completed her residency and fellowship at Mount Sinai Hospital and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, respectively.

Host:

Rhie Lim, is a former CNBC reporter turned entrepreneur and tech investor. As a co-founder of LifeCanvas Technologies, Inc, a company transforming the field of 3D bioimaging, Rhie built the startup from the ground up into a profitable venture. She led a cross-functional team spanning Science, AI/ML, Software Development, Finance, Sales, Marketing, and HR, and raised over $17M from institutional investors and the NIH. Rhie also brought MIT’s first global entrepreneurship bootcamp to Seoul, South Korea, which culminated in a network of 1,200 alumni and the creation of 100+ ventures that collectively raised over $70M. Prior to this, she was a financial news reporter for CNBC Asia, covering South Korean blue-chip stocks such as Samsung, and securing exclusive interviews with numerous opinion leaders, including Warren Buffett. Rhie is passionate about filling market gaps and helping entrepreneurs build products and solutions that have a lasting impact. She holds an MBA from MIT Sloan School of Management.
