About Event

Short Stories have been a popular home for some of the greatest writers in history, from Chekov to Hemingway, Angela Carter, Neil Gaiman, and many others. They are, as Gaiman says, "tiny windows into other worlds …They are journeys you can make to the far side of the universe and still be back in time for dinner."

How can we start to master the craft of short story writing?

What are some good approaches to taking an idea (i.e. a character or setting) and developing it into an unforgettable short story?

Join us for a Q&A with writer and editor Niamh Mulvey.

Niamh's first entry into publication was through short stories published in Banshee and The Stinging Fly. Years later, her short story collection Hearts & Bones: Love Songs for Late Youth was snapped by up Picador and published to great acclaim. This year, her debut novel The Amendments, was heralded as 'the book of a nation'.

Niamh is also running our upcoming 4-Week Sprint: ✏️ Get Started With Short Stories, kicking off on June 5.

In this Q&A we'll explore:

  • Great starting points for anyone curious about writing short stories

  • How to develop characters

  • Why setting and place matter

  • How to create movement for your short tale

  • Why playfulness might be the key to unlocking your best work

  • Details on our upcoming 4-Week Sprint: ✏️ Get Started With Short Stories, kicking off on June 5.
